Who doesn’t love seeing gorgeous views of the Smoky Mountains? We know when you’re in town, you want to see these views in person. But where are the best places to go to take in the rolling mountains? One of the easiest spots to get to is the Gatlinburg Scenic Overlook, and we want to share more about it with you.
What is the Gatlinburg Scenic Overlook?
The Gatlinburg Overlook provides an incredible view of downtown Gatlinburg nestled at the foot of several mountain peaks. This overlook is one of the most photographed areas in Gatlinburg, and for good reason! But you can just take in the scenery without technology, if you want.
It does not cost anything to stop and get out at the overlook. There is a sign with a photo of the overlook from years past, and it asks, “How is the view?”
This plaque also points out where Mt. LeConte is, which if you’re standing at the sign, is right in front of you! It talks about the haziness in the air due to pollution, and shows another photo of what the view typically looks like on a hazy day.
Where is the overlook?
This overlook is a pull off on the Gatlinburg Bypass, a road that runs between the Gatlinburg Spur and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You’ll know you’re at the overlook because there is a small sign at the parking lot, and there are 4 parking spots in the lot.
What can you see?
At the Gatlinburg Scenic Overlook, you will be able to see several mountains behind downtown Gatlinburg. There are trees and woods right at the overlook that are a part of the view. Parts of Gatlinburg you can see include the Gatlinburg Space Needle, several hotels, and Anakeesta.
Other Places with Beautiful Scenic Views

Anakeesta
If you don’t mind paying for the views, Anakeesta is a great place to go! You’ll ride to the top of the mountain on a chairlift or a Ridge Rambler, and once you get there, you’ll see breathtaking views of the Smokies. Of course, you can stare at the mountains the whole time, but there’s also plenty of fun things to do, like grabbing some food, walking through gardens, ziplining, and much more!
Gatlinburg Space Needle
Another attraction you’ll have to pay for to get incredible views is the Gatlinburg Space Needle, but it’s worth it! You can see miles and miles away from where you’re at, because the observation deck is over 400 feet tall! This is a great way to take in the views.
Newfound Gap Road
If you’d rather have free views and want to spend an afternoon in the national park, then you should drive Newfound Gap Road. This road connects Gatlinburg TN to Cherokee NC, and there are plenty of stops along the way where you can get out and take in the mountain views. You can even stop and hike to Clingmans Dome!
Foothills Parkway
Foothills Parkway is another scenic drive that provides you with beautiful views of the Smokies. You can pull off at any of the overlooks, and you’ll have to see the views to believe them! Be sure to pack a picnic lunch and enjoy spending time outdoors too!
