1. Quaint History of Sevierville Area
Sevierville TN is considered the eighth oldest town in Tennessee. The city’s name comes from the name of the first governor of Tennessee, John Sevier. The town was first founded nearly 200 years ago when a treaty was made with the Cherokee Indians to allow early settlers to build in the area that was then called Forks of the Little Pigeon.
One of the oldest structures still standing from the early days of Sevierville is the Sevier County Courthouse. Well-known among travelers to the area for the building’s large white clock and gold-looking roof, the courthouse was first built in 1895. When renovations were completed on the building in 1974, the courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Sevierville TN is also the birthplace for legendary country music singer Dolly Parton. To honor the singer, and to pay tribute for all the things she has done for the community since gaining her success, there is a commemorative statue of Dolly Parton in front of the Sevier County Courthouse in Sevierville that was unveiled to the singer in 1987. The statue was designed by well-known local artist Jim Gray.
