For novices and those with younger kids, the Lower Pigeon River is more family-friendly, offering Class 1 and 2 rapids as well as a lot of flat water where the kids can actually jump out of the raft and swim.
2. Play Some Miniature Golf
Pigeon Forge is famous of the for its miniature golf courses. Numerous attractions line the Parkway, offering all sorts of excitement. From pigs to volcanoes to firetrucks and everything in between, you’re sure to find a course that fits your family to a tee.
3. Spend the Day at Dollywood
A lot of people head to the Smokies to visit Dollywood , and for good reason. The ride-filled park features tons of family friendly activities including Country Fair, a family-friendly zone that lets parents sit next to their kids on the rides. Buzz around on the Busy Bees, soar high above the treetops on the Amazing Flying Elephants or spin around on the Lemon Twist ride. When you need a break from the rides, take in one of the seasonal shows the Dollywood cast puts on. From bluegrass concerts to Christmas shows to special fireworks festivities, everyone in the family is sure to enjoy the entertainment Dollywood has to offer.
4. Become a Junior Ranger
Does your child want to be a park ranger when they grow up? Let them get a head start with the National Park Service’s Junior Ranger Program. Pick up a Junior Ranger booklet at the Cades Cove or Elkmont campground to begin. Once your child completes all the activities in the booklet, they can turn it in to receive their Junior Ranger badge. It’s a fun activity that lets the whole family explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and learn all about the park’s history, culture, recreation, and nature in an interactive way.
5. Zipline Through the Treetops
If you’ve ever wanted to experience the feeling of flying, you’ll come pretty close with ziplining. As you sail through the air, you’ll get a spectacular view of the Smokies and you might catch a glimpse of some of the creatures that call these mountains their home. One of the great things about ziplining is that the whole family can participate. Several of the ziplining outfits feature kid-friendly lines as long as your child is a certain age and weight. Even if your child doesn’t meet the required weight limit to zipline alone, some of the courses offer tandem rides with an experienced guide.
