For lovers of the Smoky Mountains who want to make the most of their vacation, Clingmans Dome is a familiar mountaintop destination. Most people take the drive down Clingmans Dome Road, leading them to the Clingmans Dome parking lot. From there, they’ll prepare for the half-mile hike up to the Clingmans Dome observation tower, a must-visit Gatlinburg attraction.
It’s time to make your plans to visit Clingmans Dome, if you want to visit the tower without a major hike! Clingmans Dome Road is set for the seasonal closure to begin on December 1 and run through March 31. They close to road to prevent accidents during the icy and snowy months in the Smokies. Since Clingmans Dome sits at a much higher elevation, temperatures are always colder at the observation tower.
Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, standing tall at 6,643 feet above sea level. The observation tower is at the summit of Clingmans Dome, where visitors can experience a 100-mile view on clear days. No other Gatlinburg attraction comes close to the view from Clingmans Dome!
Be sure to dress warmly when you visit Clingmans Dome! After Clingmans Dome Road closes, you will have to hike the seven-mile paved roadway to reach the observation tower. There are also trails that lead to the area, for those who enjoy taking a deeper hike into the mountains!
