Cades Cove at sunsetYou don’t always have to go hiking for the best Smoky Mountain experiences. Although hiking can be relaxing and enjoyable, Cades Cove offers a spectacular auto tour for visitors. When you are looking for things to do in Gatlinburg, drive the 11-mile Cades Cove loop road. You won’t even have to worry about stepping out of your car!

Take the drive to Cades Cove in Gatlinburg, and you will experience unbelievable views and numerous historical sights. Once you arrive at Cades Cove, there will be an auto tour guidebook box. The box has small brochures that will give you details about the area as you drive through. The pamphlet will help you understand the historical buildings so you don’t miss anything along the way.

Cades Cove was home to the first settlers of the Smoky Mountains, so the structures have been kept in wonderful condition. Throughout the auto tour, you and your family will see sights like historical mills, barns and cabins. Many people will stop along the roadsides to take photographs of the buildings, gorgeous scenery and wildlife, so make sure to pack your camera!

Depending on traffic, the tour can last anywhere from two to four hours. Plan to spend the afternoon at Cades Cove in Gatlinburg for the full experience. If you arrive at dawn or are still in the area at dusk, make sure you keep an eye on the wildlife. You may catch a glimpse of a black bear when you are driving around the Cades Cove loop road.
